Traralgon and Gippsland

Gippsland is a rural region that makes up the southeastern part of VictoriaAustralia,[1] mostly comprising the coastal plains to the rainward (southern) side of the Victorian Alps (the southernmost section of the Great Dividing Range). It covers an elongated area of 41,556 km2 (16,045 sq mi) located further east of the Shire of Cardinia (Melbourne‘s outermost southeastern suburbs) between Dandenong Ranges and Mornington Peninsula, and is bounded to the north by the mountain ranges and plateaus/highlands of the High Country (which separate it from Hume region in Victoria’s northeast), to the southwest by the Western Port Bay, to the south and east by the Bass Strait and the Tasman Sea, and to the east and northeast by the Black-Allan Line (the easternmost section of the Victoria/New South Wales state border).[2]

The Gippsland region is generally divided by the Strzelecki Ranges and tributaries of the Gippsland Lakes into five statistical sub-regions — namely the West GippslandSouth GippslandLatrobe ValleyCentral Gippsland and East Gippsland. As at the 2016 Australian census, Gippsland had a population of 271,266, with the principal population centres of the region, in descending order of population, TraralgonWarragulDrouinBairnsdaleMoeSaleMorwellWonthaggiLeongatha, and Phillip Island. Latrobe Regional Health (LRH) is located 150km east of Melbourne at Traralgon West and is recognised as the regional provider of specialist health services in Gippsland. We are a public health service established under the Health Services Act 1988 (Vic). This followed the amalgamation of public hospitals in Traralgon and Moe and a nursing home in Morwell in 1991. LRH became the major provider of acute mental health services in the region in 1995, taking over from Hobson Park Hospital, Traralgon.

We provide public hospital services in accordance with the principles of the National Health Care Agreement (Medicare) and the Health Services Act 1988 (Vic).

LRH has more than 300 beds and cares for a population of more than 290,000. Our catchment covers about 42,000 square kilometres from Phillip Island to Mallacoota in the far east.

We provide cardiac care, surgery, medical, renal, emergency care, aged care, women’s and children’s services, pharmacy, allied health and rehabilitation. Medical and radiation oncology are offered by the Gippsland Cancer Care Centre on site.

LRH offers inpatient care to people experiencing mental illness and community mental health services extend across the Latrobe Valley, Sale, Bairnsdale, Yarram, Orbost, Warragul and Wonthaggi. Our Macalister Unit has 10 acute beds for older people with complex needs relating to mental illness as well as 10 nursing home beds.

Our Emergency Department receives over 40,000 presentations per year, or around 100-140 patients per day, and this is increasing year on year. Approximately 1 in 5 of presentations are paediatric and 1 in 3 patients are admitted. Our emergency department currently sees on average 100 patients a day (with numbers continuing to increase every year) with 1/3rd of presentations paediatric. We see a full range of patient presentations including Trauma.
